About the Trip

The Route - MapThe trip takes us from Boston to northern Labrador and then we return via the Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec and White Mountains of New Hampshire.  Exciting and scenic times ahead.

August 14th to September 2nd, 2014

Well, here we go on another adventuresome motorcycle trip to the north country. Last time it was Prudhoe Bay – – – this time it is northern Labrador. The riding brothers will include the original Prudhoe Bay ride group (myself, Dennis Madsen, John Spring and Chris Jones) plus a most adventuresome and experienced rider, Jerry Ivy.

The ride was Dennis’s idea and he organized the ride itinerary while Chris took care the transportation logistics for getting our bikes to Boston. That is for everyone’s bike except Dennis’s scoot. He felt he needed a warm up ride before we head north so he is riding his bike from Seattle to Boston.

The ride will begin the morning of August 14th in Boston when we will hop on Rt 1 and point our bikes north with our first overnight stop in Ellsworth, Maine after taking in Arcadia Natl Park and Bar Harbor (aka Baa Haaba!). From here our itinerary will take us through New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to Sidney, NS where we take an overnight ferry ride across Cabot Strait to Channel-Port aux Basques, NL. The next eleven days we will be riding around and through Newfoundland and Labrador until we drop down into Quebec on the north side of the St. Lawrence River to Baie Comeau. Dennis and John have to get back to Seattle so they will scoot to Quebec City and on the Boston and home while myself, Chris and Jerry will cross the St. Lawrence River (aka Fleuve Saint-Laurent) to Matane and ride around the Gaspe Peninsula on the way back to Boston. I will take an additional detour to visit Wilton, ME where my folks used to live and where I had my first real job – – – washing dishes at Camp Kineawatha on Wilson Pond – – – a girls camp! From there I will head west and ride through the White Mountains on my back to Boston and home.

This promises to be another amazing bike trip. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and the mosquitoes will be hibernating (dream on Wally!!). No matter what, I know this trip will be memorable and exciting. I hope you enjoy riding along with us. We look forward to sharing are experiences with you.

Pura vida,
Wally

PS – For those of you who followed our ride to Prudhoe Bay you may recall the problems and worries I was having during the entire trip from a persistent whine that appeared to be emanating from my belt. Several stops at Harley dealers along the way failed to identify the cause even though I was provided with numerous explanations and cures. Well, I have some good news and some bad news. It took Joe, an old mechanic friend of mine at Eastside Harley, to find the problem. That is the good news. The bad news is that the problem was quite severe – – – the main bearing in my transmission had failed and I needed a complete transmission overhaul. L It is lucky that I am still not stuck on the Haul Road somewhere between Fairbanks and Prudhoe Bay!
