I am sorry to report that the intermittent and low band width of wifi in Newfoundland and Labrador has made it quite difficult to do postings. The last one I did covering the ride from Alma to Sidney and on to St. John’s NB, which took considerable time to compose and upload photos, got lost in cyberspace and couldn’t be recovered. That was a final straw so I have reverted back to Facebook posts which are much easier and direct. Sorry I can’t provide a running commentary on this amazing ride through the Atlantic Maritimes and beyond, but such is life. We have to go with the flow and make adjustments to challenges as they come along.
We are now in Mary’s Harbour, Labrador. Interesting area. Quite barren but impressive in its wide open spaces. Obviously it wasn’t too long ago (10,000 years ago) that it was covered by the Arctic ice shield. We have just recently (Red Bay), said goodbye to the paved portion of the Trans Labrador Highway (affectionately referred to as the TLH) and are now riding on gravel. We have a 250 mile jaunt tomorrow to Happy Valley Goose Bay LB which should be challenging, especially if our threatening weather turns to rain.
Will upload a few photos so you can get an appreciation for the expanse of Labrador and the TLH.
If you want to follow us on our trip, please visit me on Facebook. Again, I am sorry that I couldn’t continue to keep posting. Thanks for joining along on this amazing adventure. Until then – – – Au revoir. Je vais vous sur Facebook <We are getting near Quebec :)>

Hi… I have been considering riding the Trans Labrador this coming summer on my Harley Ultra (the ride will start near Toronto, head east into Quebec and take the TLH clockwise then the ferry to Newfoundland, around the island then back home). Most ride reports I’ve found are by riders on dual sport bikes. The dual sports seem the obvious choice for this route but I’m not about to buy one just for this ride so I’m trying to get as much info as I can from those that have done it on street bikes.
I’d be interested in any info you have to share from your experience (I could’t find your Facebook entries) – e.g. how bad was the gravel?, any issues with your Harleys?, any surprises (other than the obvious challenges of riding in various forms of gravel)? Thanks in advance for any info, pics, etc that you can share. …Bob

Hi Bob. Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner but I just saw your post. Did you make the ride last summer? I hope you found it as interesting as we did. I rode a 2010 CVO Street Glide. Before I left I bought a set of softer tires as I heard they were a little better on the gravel roads. The biggest challenge riding on the gravel road across Labrador from Red Bay to Quebec was the occasional road construction. They don’t care if there is excess loose gravel.
Regarding riding on the gravel, I quickly found out that it was much easier and more stable if I road at speeds 40mph and up. It took some doing to get brave enough to run at the higher speeds.
Let me know what your trip was like.
Saludos,
Wally
